July, 1972

It was the last time I saw her,
Next to the carousel, my mother:
in cheap pearls, a torn skirt, red
lipstick bruising her mouth. And

She closed her eyes, and breathed.
I was nervous, anxious, a seven
year old with scratched up knees.
She smiled slightly,
crying, quite openly.

(She smiled
as she left me.)

A collab with the talented :icontoadsmoothy2: who, after reading my poem based on a polaroid he took, asked me to make a digital piece with it. So..here it is.
I don't know if it is what he had in mind, but it just came to me..

I like it how I'm just beginning to discover really good visual poetry on dA :) you know, more than just word-processing a poem in a nice or interesting font over a mildly related picture.

:+fav: cause this is so well put together.

This is really a beautiful, beautiful piece. Even the sum of its parts are deeply moving, and the whole even more so.

I've been reading this for days now, and there is something I just can't put my finger on. Is this a poem about abandonment, or is it a poem about death?

I initially felt that it was about a mother leaving her child, and I'm still fairly certain that it is, but the ferris wheel in the picture makes me think of an accidental death as well (unless my mind works in some morbid, unusual manner).

Again, this is truly a wonderful piece. It's not often you find people who are exceptionally talented in both writing and graphics. :)

I love how you question it. In my mind, the mom has disapeared, but how, the girl has no idea. I was actually contemplating doing a few more pieces...tell a story of her trying to find her mother...

Awesome Piece! It feels very real. esp. because of the rip in the notes. It reminds me of the Twisted Metal Black Notebook, which I think is a good thing because I found the stories in there very believable lol Props to you!

I lost my mother in 1971 .The last time I saw her was etched in memory in much the same way as your poetic piece. The tragic circumstances of her disappearance and death caused a wound to my teenage psyche which never leaves me. But it has given me a certain sensitivity to loss and unrequited love that most people suffer at some point in their lives. I find myself occasionally counseling this particular type of grief, and through my art ,fiction, and poetry transmute the negative aspects of that pain into something creative, positive ,and ultimately healing. You tapped into that sudden gut wrenching vacancy with your piece. I hope it was an imagined loss on your part and not composed of bitter experience.Either way ,there is an authenticity to the composition. I hope this is the start of a series.Griffin and Sabine come to mind...

It always amazes me when I tap into people's personal stories. I do not always know where my ideas come from, this one was not personal, though a lot of my poems are.

I am sorry for your loss, however long ago it was. And the series idea is a good one, I hadn't thought of it until now.

I love griffin and sabine..
